Rhinoplasty Recovery Tips

You’ve been dreaming of a new, beautiful nose, and you’re one step closer to seeing the image you’ve longed for in the mirror. But even as you schedule and prepare for rhinoplasty, or a “nose job,” you should also understand what the recovery period is like after the procedure.

The good news is that recovery after a nose job is usually minimal, even though it could take up to one year for your new nose to reach its final appearance.

Here are four important rhinoplasty recovery tips that will help you better manage your expectations following surgery and help ensure your recovery proceeds effectively.

1. Don’t be alarmed with the swelling and bruising.

The first few days following your procedure are the most uncomfortable and unattractive, too! You’ll have swelling, bruising, and skin discoloration in the nose, cheeks, and eye areas. Don’t worry. These side effects will fade over time.

2. You won’t be able to breathe through your nose at first.

A splint and/or packing may be placed inside your nose and a splint or bandages placed on the outside to support and protect the new structures during initial healing. This makes breathing through your nose impossible.

Your doctor will remove the splints and/or packing about one week post-surgery.

3. Don’t plan a beach vacation right after a nose job.

Even though you’ll likely be cleared to return to work and daily activities as soon as you feel like doing so, you’ll still need to take care of the skin on and around your nose.

This means limiting sun exposure for up to 8 weeks post-surgery.

4. It may take a year before you’re back to your normal routine.

Your doctor will guide you on a graduated plan adding physical activity back into your schedule during recovery. Confirm the exact timing with your doctor, but generally speaking, you’ll follow a plan similar to this:

  • One week after surgery: no activity or work

  • Two weeks after surgery: return to work, but avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting

  • One month after surgery: okay for moderate physical activity

  • Two-three months after surgery: mostly back to normal routine, but no contact sports

  • Six-twelve months after surgery: all activities are okay, including contact sports
